Scharffs Schlossweinstube’s cuisine
Chef Martin Scharff mainly uses seasonal and regional products and herbs that come from the castle’s garden. Possessing great creativity, he shows true artistry when he’s behind the stove. On Scharffs Schlossweinstube’s menu, you’ll find his creative vegetable cuisine with French and Mediterranean influences. Expect re–invented regional Kurpfälzer dishes that are made according to the chef’s 3-part principle: one-third tradition, one-third trend, one-third innovation. This way, old Kurpfälzer recipes transformed into uncomplicated and tasty creations. Good to know: a vegetarian menu is always available, and vegan options are available upon request. The menus are excellently complemented by outstanding wines from Heidelberg Castle’s historic wine cellar, which features the world’s largest wine barrel.
Heidelberg Castle area
Heidelberg Castle is a perfect and popular backdrop for all kinds of events, ranging from wedding and family celebrations to business events. Nestled along the Neckar river, there’s plenty to see in this hotspot of German romanticism, which is nearly as old as the town of Heidelberg itself. Take a stroll through the 17th-century castle gardens, constructed by garden architect Salomon de Caus and commissioned by Prince Elector Friedrich V for his wife Elizabeth. Or explore the castle’s wine cellar which hides the Heidelberg Tun. This was built by Prince Elector Karl Theodor and is the world’s largest wine barrel. It holds 220,000 liters of wine, and has a dance floor on top of it. Needless to say, it's’ the perfect place for wine tastings. The lower floor of the Otto Heinrich Building is also worth a visit. Here lies the Apothecary Museum. Its unique collection includes a complete pharmacist’s office, a laboratory, manuscripts, and over 1,000 drugs which represent medicine from the 17th to 19th centuries.
